So I had a pretty nasty crash on my motorcycle on Monday and I walked away with a finger broken into the joint and some light-moderate road rash on my leg. I've been sitting at home with a splinted brace on my hand and an ace bandage on the leg with some silver sulfadiazine for the road rash. Any of you medics know of any way to help speed up my hand's recovery without jeopardizing the potential movement of the finger in the future? Thanks!

Hey man, My brother wrecked a couple of weeks ago at the track. I also know all too well what you are feeling, ( two broken knees, broken arm, and broken ring finger knuckle). Yeah, I don't ride anymore. "I keep telling myself that motorcycles are the DEVIL" Hope you start feeling better, but at least your wife doesn't have to give you a bath.

You said a broken finger into the joint. I assume you had an XRay. What restrictions did you physician give you as to movement of the finger? The fact that it's splinted tells me he doesn't want it moved.

Quit typing so much for a while!

On a more serious note, glad it wasn't any worse and hope you recover quickly. I can only speak third hand and on a limited basis, but I also know someone who benefited from PRP. I have heard that YMMV depending on a host of factors, but that's something for you and your doctors to decide.

Fingers are no fun to break, jam or dislocate. A lot of mine are crooked on both hands from remedial, improper or simply insufficient treatment, and I'll probably have terrible arthritis some day. It already messes with my grip for shooting, which at present, makes me feel like an idiot for not taking care of them earlier in my life. Don't rush it, in other words-- hopefully you have the time to let it recover.

Was your brother riding a black Yamaha R1 at Circuit Grand Bayou/No Problem Raceway?

    What is PRP therapy?

Yes, my physician and hand specialist both told me not to move it, so the splint only comes off when I get a bath and clean out the road rash.

Man, let that finger heal for as long as you can. When I was younger (47 now) I abused my hands pretty badly. Now at this tender age arthritis has set in, and it will only get worse until I die. That's important to remember. When I was young that didn't occur to me. At that age your outlook is such that you think you can and will recover from anything. Well some things you can't recover from, and arthritis is one of them. Imagine how it feels to not be able to turn a door knob or a screwdriver. All this and more can be yours if you just don't take care of your hands.

    Sorry man...

I had a wreck (civic ran a redlight and ended up in my lap) about a dozen years ago when I broke my left ring finger. I'm convinced that when the airbag deployed my wedding band (see honey, if I hadn't had my ring on...) caught on the control stalk on my wife's 2 week old Saturn it twisted and shattered the upper bone (between knuckle and middle joint). Minor surgery, a pin, a plate, 6 screws, and 6 months of home PT and I was mostly fine. DO THE PT. I've got probably 90% use. I miss that other 10%.
Anyway, it all worked out ok, yours will too. Give it time.

I'm sorry to hear about your injury too, but thank you all for the advice. My leg is getting better, and while my finger is still purple and immobilized, I recognize how much worse it could've been. I escaped without any extra metal installed too, so I'm grateful for that.
