Here is the situation. My mother's family has 30 acres of land that a few family members(cousins and nephews) myself included use for shooting and have set up some target stands on. The land is gated and posted. We have been shooting there for a couple of years but now one of the family members who also shoots there is getting worried because we don't have any type of liability insurance and is concerned if someone gets hurt and the injured family member sues the rest of the family. My question is does anyone have a similar situation and how do you address the insurance issue. Would a general liability policy cover a private shooting range or would it be a special policy.

If you're opening a public shooting range then yes, you need a specialty policy.
If you're shooting recreationally for family and a few friends a regular liability policy would be fine. Assuming the property is owned by your mother only and she has a traditional good homeowners policy and this is all in LA (lots of "if's" in there, you really need to talk to her agent!) her homeowners liability could possibly extend to the land (assuming again that there is no camp/home/structure on the land). If the coverage does extend have her raise the limit of coverage from 100K to 500K or higher is not very expensive. The last time I did that for someone the increased premium was around $60 a year...

Join Forest Landowners Associtation, get their hunters/shooting liability insurance policy. It is inexpensive to join the FLA, and their policy and coverage is also inexpensive.

NRA has some types of inexpensive insurance as well.

I would not speak in terms of a "shooting range" with anyone. Instead, you just have some private property and hunt/discharge firearms there. Make sure you can't harm ANYONE outside/beyond your property! That's 80% of the risk.
