I just purchased a holster that is in need of a little TLC. It's in good shape but beginning to show signs of drying out a bit. What would you recommend using to put life back into the leather?
Mink Oil . It's actually a cream . You can find it at WalMart and most other places .
It won't soften the leather to the point that it loses it's shape .
Beltman.com sells some stuff called obenauf's leather preservative. The stuff is great. I use it on my gun belts and leather boots. The big selling point is that it conditions and protects gun belts without softening them so they go limp.
Other options might be Pecards Leather Conditioner or Black Rock Leather N Rich. I've used both on Civil War era leather such as belts, cartridge boxes, and cap boxes with excellent results.
Thanks ... I really appreciate your suggestions. I didn't want to use something that would make the holster loose its' shape or stain my clothes. You've been a big help!
First "Saddle Soap" Lather, allow to dry somewhat, wipe with damp rag - allow to dry overnite (preferably in front of a heat vent - good time of year for that).
Second day "Mink Oil", wipe off excess - waterproofs, forms an oil barrier.
Mink Oil works good but can feel greasy for a while after application. I guess that is the point and I use it on my boots but a holster that I am going to wear I would not want it to discolor my clothing. An old cowboy told me to try Olive Oil (yea the kind you cook with) on my saddle. It works really well and does not leave that residue.
