Smallbore and Pistol Cartridge lever rifle silhouette match this weekend. Bring your lever guns or bring whatever you have if you are a beginner. You can even bring a scoped .22 if you want.

When: Sunday, June 1, 2014 - Range opens about 8:30 AM

Where: Ascension Parish Sheriff's Range, Gonzales (Across the street from Lamar Dixon)

What: Lever rifle silhouette (called Cowboy Lever Action silhouette) is shot with (mostly) lever rifles and open sights (no scopes). It is NOT Cowboy Action shooting where you have to dress like a cowboy and have a western nickname). It's shot on larger targets than the scoped silhouette game. We are shooting Smallbore Cowboy rifle (any tube-fed .22 rifle but you are welcome to shoot whatever you bring) and Pistol Cartridge Lever guns (rifles chambered in pistol calibers like .357 mag and .44 mag - also .22LR and .22 mag) The object is to shoot a steel target off a rail. It's lots of fun.

Equipment needed: Any .22 rifle is fine. Also ammo and ear plugs. If you have a .22 mag rifle or a pistol cartridge rifle, bring it. You can even bring a pistol out and shoot it if you want. There is a $8 entry fee but if it's your first time you can probably get free entry (or I'll pay your entry fee)

    Come out and try it!

I have everything I need, just haven't had time yet to load any yet. I was planning on shooting factory 44 spl loads if that is ok. If not, I'll wait till next time when I have had time to test out some light loads. I certainly do not want to cause any target damage etc. Thanks

It should be fine... Come on out and shoot. We like to get new people hooked.

I can't see my sights but I'll give it a go. I'll bring a buddy. I told him this silhouette game is quite a humbling experience for me. I'm gonna try a variety of tactics to get in the black, maybe southpaw.

I have never shot a match before but it sounds like fun. Have a peep sight (rear) on my Marlin .357. Is that OK?

Would shooting this match with a 30-30 with reduced cast bullet loads be possible? Say 180 gr bullets going 1800fps ?

No, unfortunately a 30-30 is not a pistol cartridge caliber and will certainly damage the targets. We do, however, shoot 30-30 lever guns in big bore Cowboy Lever Action silhouette. We won't be shooting big bore on Sunday though.

Are metal jacketed factory .38 Special rounds okay? I won't have time to reload with non-jacketed projectiles. Would be shooting in a Marlin '94. How many cartridges do you suggest be brought? And at what range(s) are the targets set?

Factory .38 Special should be fine. Matches are 40 shots. With warmup I usually shoot about 60 rounds per match. Chickens are set at 40 meters, pigs at 50 meters, turkeys at 75 meters and rams at 100 yards.

This sounds good. Can't make this weekend but will try next month. No lever gun here but a Remi 597 should work?
