    Anyone know what the charge is for prints at LSP headquarters? Cash only? Thanks.

    *** EDIT ***

    Nevermind. Found the answer to my own question on the LSP site. $10, cash or credit.

    I think this is what it used to be (money order or cashier’s check only and made payable
    to LA Department of Public Safety
    But I could call them before you go to be sure.
    And it was $10

    Man I was just thinking I had my prints done 20 years ago at the old City jail in Baton Rouge. Damn I'm old

    Well this is what I find on their website.

    Contact your local police office, local sheriff's department, or State Police Headquarters in Baton Rouge for fingerprinting. Fingerprinting at State Police Headquarters requires a $10.00 money order or can be paid using a debit/credit card.*

    Took the class July 1. Talk about a joke. Not that I am a know it all, but I knew it all. I did a lot of reading pertaining to the laws and the process of getting the permit before going to the class. Was handed about a dozen pages of print outs with all the laws and a copy of the application. Was told to read through that and then the instructor disappeared for about an hour or so. Came back around lunch time with some pizza and disappeared again for about 30 minutes. Felt like I was dealing with a used car salesman.

    One thing that he told us that I didn't know beforehand, was that if you are a military vet, with an honorable discharge, you get your permit at no cost. WOW! This is what he actually told two vets in the class. He told them that when they submit the application to not send in payment, just a copy of their discharge paperwork. When we took a break, I showed them on the website where it says vets get a discount: 5 year permit, $62.50, lifetime permit, $250. They both had the attitude that the instructor knows what he is talking about and they were going to do what he said.

    The two range officers and the instructor both looked clueless when I told them that I didn't want to pay for the affidavits to be notarized and didn't want to pay for fingerprinting. I told them that I was going to have the prints done at Baton Rouge and complete the application online. All three made sure that I knew that the range was going to be closed Monday & Tuesday and that the instructor wouldn't be there to do the prints and notarization again until the following Saturday.

    Anyway, took the class, went to Baton Rouge Monday morning and had an email before I got back to my car saying that the application was accepted. I followed the link to pay online and had it paid before I left there. This morning, July 6 received an email saying that the application was approved and that I should have the physical permit by mail within 10-15 days. Now I will be looking into some real training while waiting for the permit to arrive.

    Read 2. d.

    "d) *NOTE* Effective August 1, 2016 Act 44 of the 2016 Louisiana Legislative Session exempts HONORABLY DISCHARGED veterans of the U.S. armed forces from all fees associated with 5-year or lifetime concealed handgun permits. This Act doesn’t affect currently active military personnel. Active duty personnel remain eligible to receive the half price discount with a copy of your most recent orders"

    I stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

    How'd you do on the marksmanship test?
    Would have liked to have done better. Only the second time shooting the M & P Shield.

    That's not like any of the classes I've have since I got my CHP years ago. Sounds like some lazy people putting on the class. Glad you didn't waste you time and money on their prints.

    I don't have anything to compare his class to, but the course I took with Dave Newman at Concealed Carry Nola was very informative and well run. He was knowledgeable on the current regulations, made sure everyone knew how to deal with their firearms (strip & clean, properly hold & fire), came up with different scenarios to go through, and sent links with more info on laws, insurance, and other things to do with concealed carrying after the class ended. Will be going back through him when my wife goes for her CHP and also when my renewal comes up.

    I'm really interested to know what you expected from the class?

    I think the only expectations that I had were that the class would cover what is required by law:

    §1311. Handgun Training Requirements
    A. Upon initial application to the department for a permit, all applicants shall demonstrate
    competence with a handgun by any one of the following:
    1. completion of any Department of Public Safety and Corrections approved firearms safety
    or training course which shall include at least a minimum of nine hours of instruction as detailed
    below:

    Our class started around 11:30 am and I was out at 6:30, not quite 9 hours.

    a. one hour of instruction on handgun nomenclature and safe handling procedures of a
    revolver and semi-automatic pistol;
    If going over the four fundamental safety rules count, that's what we discussed. But it didn't last an hour.

    b. one hour of instruction on ammunition knowledge and fundamentals of pistol shooting;
    Never talked about ammo other than about five minutes of joking around talking about how many rounds is enough and how many extra mags you should carry.

    c. one hour of instruction on handgun shooting positions; Didn't happen at all.

    d. three hours of instruction on the use of deadly force and conflict resolution which shall
    include a review of R.S. 14:18 through 14:22 and which may include a review of any other laws
    relating to the use of deadly force;
    I suppose the handouts that we were given counted towards this. Maybe off and on we talked about things that could also count towards this three hours.
    22
    e. one hour of instruction on child access prevention; Talked about kids for about 30 minutes.
    and
    f. two hours of actual live range fire and proper handgun cleaning procedures: How fast can you shoot 36 rounds at a target at three different distances? Took maybe 20 minutes, tops. Never once talked about cleaning a handgun or safety when cleaning.
    Was never even asked if we could safely and properly field strip our handguns.

    i. live range fire shall include at a minimum 12 rounds each at 6 feet, 10 feet and 15 feet
    for a total of 36 rounds; Did this.

    ii. each applicant or permittee shall perform at least one safe reload of the handgun at
    each distance; This was done, but I know for sure the instructor did not witness me reload my handgun.

    I guess that's all that I expected.

    What I didn't expect was receiving a completion certificate with a name and signature of someone different than the name of instructor. I also didn't expect the instructor number to be printed on the certificate incorrectly either.

    From what i've found to be common no matter where you go for CCW class. Its not really enough training so to speak to carry. Though there are some that are really good. Thankfully we live in an area with some of the better training groups around (ex Vata or advantage, ETC.). Pick one and go learn from them. A 200 or 400 dollar (if you do a two day course) investment in your own protection.
