I have a friend with a 1830 hawkins flintlock he is almost out and needs to find some true blackpowder. He will not fire the new muzzle powders " Don't know why".

Any suggestion on a supplier for a few pounds of the smokey true old powder.

The black powder replacements are harder to ignite that true black powder. Read on the Pyrodex website that for flintlock arms to prime the barrel with 5gr of black powder prior to the main charge of Pyrodex. That and Pyrodex makes a crappy prime charge. 4F black powder works far better. For flintlocks it's black powder all the way. How do I know all this? I shoot a Brown Bess every so often.

In Louisiana we have a grand total of one, yes just one, licensed black powder dealer. Crying shame as the only black powder manufacturer in the US is located in Doyline, LA near Shreveport. Contact Judge Angelo J. Piazza, III at http://www.jackspowderkeg.com/. His honor is the city judge of Marksville, LA. A hardcore Civil War re-enactor and a nice guy all around.

Due to Louisiana law you can only purchase and possess 5 pounds of black powder. You will have to present ID and sign a statement of release and certification. You cannot resell black powder. Shipping on black powder is expensive as it gets the full blown HazMat treatment. Do yourself a favor and pick it up in person.

When did they pass that law?? I get mine from Graf & Sons.
The law has been on the books for a long time. During the last legislative session SB82 was introduced to ease the restrictions and allow purchase and possession of 25lb of black powder. However it was gutted in committee with pressure from the state police. End result that was signed into law is that if you are part of a recognized artillery unit of cultural re-enactors and certified by the state parks you can purchase and possess 25lb. For the rest of us it's still 5lb.

I have a cannon we had made back in the early 60s when I was in the Boy Scouts. The troop I was in participated in the reenactments at the Battle of New Orleans. We wear British Troops and got tired of dying. We wanted a cannon. One of the boy’s dads in or troop turned out a master in wood and my father took it to Bancroft and Ross and old foundry in New Orleans and had a barrel cast in Cast-iron. A 12 oz. beer can just fits the boor. The barrel is too short for a two wheeled gun, so I turned it into a Navel Gun. I proofed it with a pound of powder. It rocked the neighborhood, there in Chalmette.

Nope. I don't know squat about black powder, but I'd like to. What's wrong with the Blackhorn stuff and the Pyrodex that Cabelas sells?

I'm curious, because I have an 1871 Martini Henry that I'd love to use during black powder hunting season, but of course I'll have to cast Minie balls and make up black powder handloads to use it.

Black powder substitute, Pyrodex and the like, doesn't work well at all in flintlock arms. The substitutes are harder to ignite than true black powder. Even Hodgdon suggests to prime the main charge with 5gr of black powder prior to the charge of Pyrodex. That and nothing works better than FFFFg black powder in the prime pan.

In centerfire and caplock arms the substitutes work fine. The percussion caps and primers have enough oomph (<-- technical term) to ignite the substitutes. I see only two advantages to the substitutes over true black powder. 1-The substitutes are widely available and 2-You have more wiggle room prior to cleaning the guns. With true black powder you have about 3 hours to get them cleaned in our environment.

If you're not into casting Minie balls there are a couple sources. Track Of The Wolf and Dixie Gun Works have everything you could need for primative arms.

I've got a couple of partial cans of black I would be willing to part with. Send me a PM.

Just checked it. Near full cans, one each of FF and FFF. Let me know if you need them.
