I have magpul ladder covers as well as Magpul XT's on my rails, they are great. The XT's have a great grippy surface but they are a PITA to put on. The ladders are low profile and nice, easy install too. No problems even with intense multi day training

what do people mean protect the rails? it is metal, and isn't going to bend or break. I like the magpul covers for grip, but I don't care about protecting the rails...

    can someone explain?

Most are made of aluminum, some are plastic/polymer. They are precision cut for specific mounting options, and under certain strenuous conditions they can get beat up. While it's true most of us will not be exposed to those conditions there is nothing wrong with trying to protect them.

    I have met/known people who could bend/break a steel block. ;)

I have the low profile "ladder" rail covers and they feel alot better than the bare aluminum. They fit on tight and I don't see why they would ever wear out.

I also had no intention in hanging crap off my gun, but wanted a freefloat tube. I went with the clark carbon fiber. I am very happy w/ mine.
