The Louisiana Shooting Association and Palo Alto Rifle & Pistol Club were well represented at the 2023 National Trophy Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio.

In the Small Arms Firing School’s M-16 Match Peter Cassady and James Davis each received their first four Excellent in Competition points towards earning their Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge.

Four of our members, Michael Burke, Sam Beane, and Michael Cameron posted very competitive scores in the CMP 2400 Aggregate Match during three days of shooting. Michael Cameron placed 67th overall and 4th senior with a score of 2330-67X.

Four of our members, Chance Cavin, Tyler Fontenot, Lt. Col Jeff Sovern, and Michael Cameron each earned President’s Hundred medals in the most prestigious match of the year; the President’s Rifle Trophy.

Four of our members earned Daniel Boone medals in the National Trophy Individual match. These members are Chance Cavin – Gold, Michael Cameron – Bronze, Michael Burke – Bronze, Tyler Fontenot – Bronze with ten Excellent in Competition points.

In the Hearst Doubles Match the team of Amanda Wright and Jonathan Wood earned medals with a 9th place finish. Chance Cavin and Charles Spiker earned medals with a 12th place finish.

The National Trophy Team Match was our best showing overall. The 2023 LSA Team scored higher than any previous LSA Team with a 2823-68X earning 19th place in competition.

Our performance in National Infantry Team Trophy Match was of frustration and disappointment. This was the first Infantry Team Trophy event for all but one team member and was a new experience for this type of match. The LSA team was assigned the last relay for having no prior Infantry Team Match scores. A fierce thunderstorm with high winds and driving rain struck Rodrigue Range as the LSA Team advanced from the 600 yd. to the 500 yd. firing line. The sky darkened, scope reticles were hard to see, and bullets were blown off targets. The LSA Team expects to do better next year.

Five of our members medaled in the John C Garand Match; Dwayne Vidrine, Michael Burke, Chance Cavin, Danny MacGregor, and Jonathan Wood.

We all had a great time with the best of friends. A great thank you to the Louisiana Shooting Association for supporting our team. It is greatly appreciated. A special thanks goes out to CMP volunteer firing line official. John Cassady. Thank you for your service in the 2023 National Trophy Matches.
