I've been watching this thread for a bit and the idea of picking up a kit is VERY tempting.

Is this a bad idea to try to build one if I don't have much mechanical experience?

I do not own a metal lathe press, etc., but I do own plenty of woodworking and basic shop tools.

    Thanks!

with a virgin kit I would say yes. It's a bit more to be done then just rivets.

Most of the work is done with hydraulic presses, but there are a lot of specific jigs and alignment tools necessary to get it done. You could still pick up the parts and pay to have it built, or wait for another build party to happen (everyone gets together at an equipped shop and builds their rifles with help from knowledgeable folks). Been a while since the last party though, and I haven't heard any plans of another one coming up.

Either way, these days kit builds aren't the best way to go financially speaking, unless you want something specfic not already on the market.

A virgin kit is a whole different ballgame as compared to a demilled (previously a gun) kit. If you get one take it to an experienced builder like #1bambam.

Thank you all for the advice. Kind of a bummer though... I'll probably sit this one out, as it sounds a bit over my head.

    Thanks again!
