Action was taken by the NRA Board of Directors to remove the membership requirement to compete in NRA tournaments. This action was taken to open all NRA tournaments to members of all shooting organizations worldwide and the shooting public. NRA rules will change for Competitive Shooting and Law Enforcement Activities Divisions sanctioned tournaments including State Championships, Regional Tournaments, and National Championships. Effective date of this change is July 1, 2008.

This decision will enable more people to participate in NRA tournaments and will increase the opportunity for added membership as people become involved in NRA competitive shooting activities.

Starting July 1, 2008 match sponsors will no longer be required to ask for proof of NRA membership for NRA Registered tournaments.

I'm assuming only those who are members will be able to be tracked for classification???

I think that is a good assumption. However, if you are not classified, you have to shoot as a Master. The good thing is that NRA will sell you a bare bones membership (no publications) for about $10 per year so you can get a classification.

This issue should be moot, however, because all of us should be members of the NRA. For all its warts, NRA is the best game in town with respect to protecting our rights. Numbers mean something to politicians. A 4 - 5 million member NRA has clout. A 10 - 15 million member NRA would probably prevent anti-gun bills from seeing the light of day. (not that the wackos wouldn't file them, but they would not likely go anywhere). That is why I always recommend that gun owners join.
