So I just got the AK itch and I’m loving them. But finding 7.62X39 ammo is getting a bit annoying. I was playing with the thought of getting a PSL or a Nagant PU, but it looks like the ammo is way up or difficult to obtain…. At this time, does it make sense to try to get into these types of rifles? I’m not interested in paying over $1k for a rifle that is in the 100 year old range. I enjoy target shooting and feel like these would be some cool target guns, but I need too justify spending the money lol… Not worried about resale or holding worth, just want something that was part of the history of war. What say you? Only have 600 yards max distance. Any input would be appreciated.

7.62x54 ammo is getting out of reach also since surplus availability has dropped. ....The only way to get a near decent price is keeping an eye out for someone selling their stash. 7.62x39 is still widely available and comparatively cheap
Mosin Nagants were and are still the cheapest in that caliber you'll find.
"Real Dragunovs" are few and far between and prices show it, and PSL'S are Dragonovs wantabe's .
Better choice in a bolt 7.62x54 would be Finnish Mosins...M27..M28..M39

But like I stated earlier, good ammo is pricey and getting harder to find

I have brass, reloadable cases, and At least one bullet molds for every gun I own.
Even my mom's 7.65 French Long.

Psls are getting expensive and ammo is not cheap or plentiful anymore. They are just a big ak in 54r, so not too sure about what they do as a dmr type rifle that a 308 ar10 does not do better.

So more of a collectible piece, imo.

Nagants are pretty rough, unless you get a fancy one as was stated above. Still a 54r gun so the ammo problems persist.

I'm not trying to deter you, but 1k won't get you a psl, and nagants are range toys compared to a modern bolt gun in a modern caliber.

A properly setup ak in 7.62x39 or even 556 has merit. If you want a pistol x39 is a great caliber for short barrels, and 556 aks just have something that the soulless m4 lacks.

For the record I am an ak guy...

I believe the 7.62x39 will be around for some time. I dumped my 5.45 and 54r stuff long ago. Check out the galil ace, it can scratch the ak itch and you can easily mount optics and suppressors.

You going to have to just swallow the fact that 7.62x39 is now the same price as every other rifle caliber and continue to be the rest of your life. If you like it buy and shoot. If the price is out of reach substitute your shooting schedule with more pistol or even 22lr and make them count. Goodluck OP.
