New rifle...

I just acquired a rifle from my MIL. It was her husbands who passed away recently.

I'm looking for opinions on if it'll be a good long range shooter. It's a Weatherby Vanguard 7mm Rem Mag with a Leupold VXIII 6.5-20x50 scope. Might take it out to shoot this weekend.

Unless the barrel is bent, that is a nice setup. Particularly for free. Take care of it. It will reach out and touch!

Thanks. I'm not trying to shoot the matches at Palo Alto with it. Although after some research I might get the dies and try handloading some rounds for it. I have .308 and .270s for the 600yd shots.

The caliber is good for over a thousand yards in capable hands. What your rifle will do depends on your particular rifle. IIRC the vanguard series is Weatherbys base rifle, meaning it is not a Mark V.

I've been working on a load with 160gr Accubonds. Hopefully I'll be able to tell you want they do to Mule Deer and an Elk first hand this November. I found out yesterday that I drew a Mully tag.
