I'm all for my kids doing volunteer work . I prefer that they have a desire and an understanding of what it's all about . I am dead set against the government mandating anything like that .

And you just pointed out what is wrong w/ the country, and the administration that was just elected. People think they are entitled to what everyone else has without having to work for it.

I think a lot of parents have taken a generation off. They let their kids do whatever without any sign of discipline as to not "hurt" the child's self-esteem. This is complete horseshit. Undisciplined children lead to the apathetic nature of teens nowadays. It's rare to find someone under 25yrs old that has an appreciation for a hard days work, it's a sign of shitty parenting IMO. If your kid wants something, make them do a little work for it, whether it be chores or whatever.

We are itching ever closer to socialism, and yet people still look the other way. Whether or not you kid participates in community service projects should be the parents choice, not a government mandate.

This is how it starts. First they make you work for free, then they take what money you make, and before you know it, the government is making your decisions and running your life for you.

Yes, we need to solve Apathy, but that is one of the many things that needs to be solved at home, not by the .gov. Good for the families that required that their children go to certain functions, that is up to the family, and remember this, these are not military men and women we are requiring to do service work, these are not criminals paying society back for their crimes, these are innocent civilians. It IS NOT the .govs place to demand this.

Freedoms from things like this are exactly what me and you fought to protect, or are you somehow blinded to that fact now? Are you blinded to the attrocity of this situation by your love for your precious messiah?

We fought, bled, died, so that our fellow citizens could burn the flag, or be a lazy ****, or make millions. We did not fight so that the .gov could take those millions, require community service for no other reason than the fact that the .gov cannot actually afford to do all this **** it is promising.

Penguin, I beg of you as a fellow soldier (and I don't mean that in the army term, I would not want to offend you by calling you army, I was not in it either) to open your eyes, remember why we fight, what we fight for, those freedoms, and everything that goes with them.

[I]School is about an education, Extracurricular activities are just that, extra, If you dont concentrate on the education part, then you have just sent your kid to 12 years of Football Camp. A lot of parents forget that School is for education and everything else is extra, after school. However I cant worry about how other people raise thier children, I can only worry about how I raise mine[/I]

Football? Cut it. That's not about getting an education from the 3 R's. Driver's education? Cut it. Let them learn to drive on their own time. All these other groups? Nope. Get rid of them. No education there. School is more than just getting an 'A' in those 3 R's.

BTW Most of my college classmates that were in Americorps, hated it, and only did it because it was a requirement for their financial aid, while other students (insert group here) got a free ride and did not have to do any type of service and did not have to "make Grades" to keep their Financial Aid[/I]

50 years ago my grandfather made my mother study and work on the farm, for nothing, so she wouldnt have to have anyone perform community service for her one day, or work on a farm

i'm gonna be glad we'll have more people coming by the fire station to wash the trucks. granted, most of the people having to do community service get there at 3 and 4 PM, which is way too late. we wash the trucks around 7AM, and most know that, so they come late and just expect us to sign off on it. screw that. we don't just "sign off" on it around my station, lol

The problem is that parents let the Police raise their kids. They don't care because they still get that check on the 1st & 15th plus on april 15th. Then if the kid is metally ill they get that check too. I have parents that dont care what their kids doo because they are getting 4 checks from the govt and dont work, then again hell why would I if the Govt is going to give me all that money because I never went to school to LEARN, rather I stayed in the streets all day.

Now you have this NEW CHANGE Govt coming in saying they want tot take from the rich to give MORE to these people who don't work. Well you still have the oppurtunity to go out and make something of yourself you don't need some Liberal Pres. to tell you that. This land was built on Life, Liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness.

The people that voted for Obama are jus tlike the people that sit at the exit ramps of the interstates. They wil still ahve their hand out and be out there if you keep giving them money. They will NEVER get a job!

I'm sorry I just can't see the point of making it a requirement. Being told that it is required is no longer being a volunteer.
I know many kids (mine included) in this area from 10-19 yo that do a great deal of volunteer work. Some of it is through the school, but most of it is through the church. That's being a volunteer, when you are asked to help, not required to.
If you want someone to work like that, make the people living off of (abusing) the welfare system do it. They should have to do something for the money we dish out to them, let it be this at a minimum.
No need to bother the middle school to college aged kids.

Really? Hmmm...that's odd. Because in the Corps I was voluntold to 1) help repair an orphanage in Pattaya, Thailand, 2) Paint a school in Oceanside, CA, 3) work a special olympics in Camp Lejeune, NC and a million other voluntold things.

Before you speak out your ass about things you don't know of, I'll have you know that I know PLENTY of Marine families that REQUIRED their children to come to the same volunteer functions we were voluntold to do.


Hey, if you want to say that you'd rather have your children playing Xbox then helping out the community, then go for it.

I did allot of volunteer stuff when I was in the Corps to. Some I vol. and some I was vol. for... lol Either way it was good to help!

If he's giving people 'free' college that I am paying for with my tax dollars, like he says, then I don't mind them being required to do community service every year. 100% A-OK with me. Elementary & Middle school...well, if he cuts out the taxes for Dept of Education, I'm OK with it, but if I have to pay taxes for the schools and they require volunteer hours...well, my kid might just miss those days, or get home schooled.
