Deputy: "There is no God"
ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A Bernalillo County deputy’s questionable rant has two different communities speaking out and it's prompted an internal investigation in the department.
The deputy in question is 18 year veteran Deputy Jim Goff. Goff made the questionable comments toward a religious group that was protesting outside a Rob Zombie concert July 17th. One of the protestors recorded the entire situation.
The video shows Goff asking the group to leave but when they argued back he got the crowd of concert goers involved.
“Guys do you want them to stay or go,” Goff said.
Jeremy De los Santos was among the protestors. He said his group thought they were on public property because they were standing on the sidewalk in front of the Pavilion.
He did admit to arguing with the deputy when asked to leave but he said the deputy made the situation worse.
“I mean had they (the crowd) said to stay would we have been able to stay, they it wouldn't have been private property,” De los Santos said. “It assumed the officer was on the side of the crowd.”
De los Santos said the deputy showed he was biased about the situation when he revealed his beliefs to the crowd.
“I am a non-believer, there is no god, there is no Jesus, there is no Satan,” Goff said.
“Really what happened is a group of Christians got ran off a property by an atheist who happened to be an officer,” De los Santos said.
Catholic Naomi Morega said she was saddened when she heard what the deputy said.
“He's here to protect us and here he's shouting his own beliefs to other people,” Morega said.
Surprisingly De los Santos doesn't feel Goff should be reprimanded but he said he should be educated better on crowd control.
The protestor many say caused it all said the deputy's biased comments could have started a fight between the two crowds.
“That’s almost like a mob law or something,” De los Santos said.
However, Goff’s comments did not only upset the Christian community.
“You must have a crush on me, man are you like a gay homosexual, you keep filming me,” Goff said.
A member from the lesbian and gay community said she was also saddened by the deputy's comments, but said she also blames the protestors.
She said she hopes Goff doesn't make comments like this again even if a camera is not rolling.
Sheriff Manny Gonzales said they will start an internal investigation tomorrow.
