    the reality.

i have attended public and private schools
i know children who have attended both

some public school systems are are better, some private. just because its private doesn't make it better.

IMHO the problem is parents who refuse to participate in the education of their children. part of that problem is how can you expect a parent who reads on the 2nd grade level to function and help their 4th grade child? the schools and teachers are incapable of raising, disciplining children. and the problem as i see it is that people expect SCHOOLS to RAISE their children.

    This.

As far as the article.... meh.

Maybe I have bad reading comprehension but I think the writer only references "The Coming Race War in America" by Carl Rowan. This was not written by Carl Rowan nor does it have any excerpts from the book. This is written by Fred Reed, an ex-patriot white dude living in Mexico. Not saying that he doesn't have good points in there but it's not written by a black man.

Then again, I could be completely wrong.

It's a great read, if you just exclude that last sentence.

I think he was being cynical.

"The economy has no need for huge numbers of people who read at the level of second-graders, if that. The existence of these people is a fact. When such jobs exist, as for example on police forces..."

From the article. Isn't that a very big insult to LEOs everywhere? Insinuating they read on a 2nd grade level? Couldn't the author have found a better example...? I can't agree with that part. I just can't.

not being mean but there are MANY rural police departments in the country that would make you very surprised.

    No doubt

I have seen so many guys on technical jobs who just stare at tech sheets , or any kind of literature pertaining to their job. Just stare and lip mumble through a paragraph before they throw it away and start changing parts till something works.

For a part time reserve backup nephew/deputy in Unevenflatts, County I can imagine the reading level stops around speedometer.

OK, let me try from a different angle. I think ALL LEO's should be respected and thanked for the service they provide us. Comparing them to folks who read on a 2nd grade level, while possibly true in some limited instances, I think a better comparison coulda been used. Like the one in the first paragraph (above).

Why not start with reading-comprehension-challenged mechanics? Or POLITICIANS?!?!? :D Or whomever besides our Law Enforcement people? Just seemed unecessarily disrespectful. (Like those poor guys and gals need MORE disrespect!) Just sayin'....
