A relative of mine inherited this rifle but isn't really interested in keeping it. I'm thinking about buying it from him. What's a fair value?

It's a Plainfield Machine M1 Carbine in .30 cal, comes as pictured with one magazine. The bore is bright and looks really nice, everything else I'd guess is 'good' to 'fair' condition.

As you probably already know , that's not a USGI rifle . I've read where a lot of USGI parts are not interchangeable with the Plainfield . Don't know that for sure but worth checking out . I wouldn't offer more than $350 - $375 with the scope IF I really wanted it but that's just me .

That's a good start on input.

Yep, I did a little reading and know it's non USGI. Folks seem to believe these are better than the Universals, and of the Plainfields, this one is supposed to be a better build since it came from Dunnellen NJ.

Scope and mount don't mean much to me. I personally thought it would look nice with irons only, or with a fresh black Cerakote job, and shine up the wood...

    Thanks

People have laughed at this but I think the .30 Carbine is a fine home defense weapon . Remington makes a 110 gr Core-Lokt Softpoint round in 30 Carbine . The rifle is short , light , little to no recoil , high capacity mags , no over penetration , etc. Not the perfect choice but I sure wouldn't feel undergunned .

I tend to agree with you on that as a home defense rifle.

As others have mentioned, Plainfield is one of the better copies. If you decide to keep it get some usgi magazines to feed it. The 15 rd GI mags are readily available. True USGI 30 rd mags are very difficult to find and pretty expensive when you do. And many commercial mags (especially 30's) use some GI markings to further confuse the buyer.
From your pics it looks like it has the Type IV magzine release which is designed for use with the 30 rd magazines.

I also have had very good luck with Korean made magazines the 15 rounders were marked U and some KCI.

The Plainfield is a copy of the USGI. All metal parts exchange. I have two and have put USGI barrels, bolts, bolt parts (extractor, ejecter and the bolt body itself, trigger groups , and op rods on them. The Universals are another animal all together. No parts swap. If you take one apart you will see the difference between the two. I like the Plainfields, you can rebuild them forever. At least as long as you can find USGI Parts.
