    The rules are a bit different for public figures. Regardless of the stature of the person being called a name in public the name caller has to have proof of his/her statment.
    You have a legal reference for that? A codified statute reference or link to a bill that was passed and signed into law?

    The rules are different for public figures. For a public figure to win in a slander/libel case they have to prove malice. Carol Burnett was able to do just that in her suit against The National Enquirer in 1983.
