My dad is in the market of retiring hos 1903 Springfield from hunting and getting a new rifle.

We found a Mossberg 30.06 with a scope for $280 at Academy. He's on a tight budget so cant spend lots on a rifle. The only downfall to the mossberg is that it doesnt have iron sights. He likes see thru mounts for them close encounters.

Can anyone recomend a good 30.06 thats ready to hunt that wont bust the bank!

Mossberg is mossberg. If that's his budget, then it can be argued he won't find better for the price if he's wanting a new rifle.

Personally, I'd be hunting for a used savage (online or pawnshops... or even walking around at a gun show). I'd go with irons only versus scope only around here.

Prolly 400ish..... If that's too much hit your local pawn shops for a nice Remington 700.

That's what you might want to try, IMHO....seems like most of the package rifles these days don't come with iron sights. You might be surprised- you might find a good, quality used .30-06 that fits the bill at one of the local pawn shops.... :)

Ah...... Missed that part......pawn shop would be the way to go! Maybe even a good ole 30-30 with lever evolution ammo would do the trick!

Academy has the Rem 770 Stainless in 30-06, with scope, for $320

Or Mossberg 100 ATR in 30-06 for $280:

Or if he would consider a change to .308, looks like the best deal is this Savage AXIS at $259.99.

The same Savage AXIS in 30-06 is also the same price at $259.99

That's what I'm doing. Marlin 30-30 with LEVERevolution and iron sights (not many 100 + yard shots around here).

    Cabelas used gun rack.
    Had a 30-06 model 7600 (pump) for $449.00
That is an awesome deal! Because they are one of the few guns that still come standard with the iron sights and you can use it with a scope as well. The gun is also very accurate and magazine fed. My dad and I both use one when we run dogs.
