Jen Engel article
Excerpts:
This is not simply about guns. This is about rights. It is a slippery slope from doing something in the interest of public safety to giving up what we hold dear. The slope is greased with fear, with a self-righteous belief that we know better than the framers of the Constitution. And it is all based on informal fallacy.
These are the “inalienable rights” of the Declaration of Independence, and when we give them up voluntarily, for whatever reason no matter how altruistic, what we find is all we have done is given more rights to the government that were intended for us.
A couple reader comments I thought were amusing:
Statistics suggest that 90 out or every 100 Americans are armed. This problem needs to be treated seriously. We need to find a way to arm those other 10 people.
The fact that we even have this debate shows that there are those in society that are perfectly willing to accept the dire consequences of leaving their fellow citizens to the machinations of the people with whom they would entrust power. It is true ignorance of history, and it is abhorrent to the very core of a nation where all power lies in the hands of the individual.
Banning guns will not stop that - nor will driving drunk stop people from killing innocent people with their cars - nor will banning knives stop someone from stabbing someone to death. We have a PEOPLE problem - NOT A FRICKING GUN PROBLEM!!!
