This past Sunday we held our club championships and LSA Garand State Championship. It was a great day of shooting on a beautiful Sunday.
After Mr. Strickmiller gave his safety brief, we held the first match of the day, a 50-Round National Match Course for the club championship. The first stage of fire was 200 yards, offhand, no sling allowed. Mr. Owen shot a fine 97-3X with Bruce nipping at his heals with a 94-2X. After the first stage was scored and recorded we moved to the rapid fire prone stage of the match. This match consist of shooting from a sitting position with a sling and firing 2 rounds from one magazine and 8 rounds from another magazine in a time limit of 60 seconds. Mr. Owen won this stage with a 99-4X and Mike Burke was second with a 99-3X. The number of Xs you can shoot for tie breakers definitely matter in a match like this where good scores are shot. The third stage is similar to the second being shot in prone in 70 seconds on a smaller target at 200 yards. Dwayne won this stage with a 99-4X and five competitors shot a 98 with Karl taking second place on X count. At this point Mr. Owen has the lead with Vidrine, Burke, and Leblanc all neck in neck. Then we fired the last stage, 20 rounds from a prone position, loading on round at a time, on an even smaller target. Mr. Burke won this stage with a 199-9X and Mr. Owen shot a 197-11X. While Burke's score was almost perfect, it was not enough to overcome Nick's great day of shooting. Congratulations to Nick Owen, SLHP 2023 Club Champion with a 491-21X, Mike Burke was second overall with 486-14X, and Dwayne Vidrine was third overall with 484-15. The scores shot on Sunday were very good with some personal best being set.
The overall winner and each class winner received the coveted engraved SLHP knife for their efforts.
    Competitor Class Score
    Nick Owen Overall 491-21X
    Mike Burke Master 486-14X
    David Laballe Expert 425-6X
    Charles Leblanc SS/MK 474-8X
Mike Pizzolato received an engraved knife for Member of the year for his efforts at every match. Lee Shall was also recognized for his great match calling. Pizza and soft drinks were served after the match.
Thank you to Lee for calling the match, it was run very well, thank you to Mike P. for helping with the targets, George Serrett for helping with repairs on the targets, John Overton and Adrian for all you both do, Rick Mol for helping throughout the day, Sheriff Bobby Webre for allowing us to use the range, and thank you to all the competitors, we appreciate your participation.
After stuffing ourselves with pizza we began the F Class Championship. Mr. Pizzolato showed us how to shoot prone again, but he did have some tough competition this year. Mr. Moore was right there with Joey close behind. I want to thank each of you for your dedication to the program.
We also held an Louisiana Shooters Association approved Garand State Championship sanctioned by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. It was an exciting match, with shooters from as far as Lake Charles and Mississippi. Mr. Schwabe led the way in the slow fire prone and rapid fire prone, but the wily Mr. Vidrine showed us that steady and consistent can win matches. Congratulations to all who shot this match, there was only a little blood drawn during the course of firing.
Next match is November 26th. Across the Course will be the Annual Iron Sight Challenge, shoot what you want, but only iron sights compete for prizes. Bring a friend. The F-Class/Prone/Tactical is a great way to introduce somebody to the sport.
If you have not joined the South Louisiana High Power Club, please consider doing so. Annual dues are $25.00 and will include your first match entry fee.
