Trying to develop a backpack for worst case senerio: beacause of whatever, youve got less than a minute to get out of the house and go. Want to travel fast and light, probably will be on foot eventually, when gas is gone,, and traffic stalled, etc.
I want basic items, just to get thru a day or two, till the dust settles.
I don't want any battery powered items. I'll have my cell phone, which probably won't work anyway.
    My items so far are:
    Handheld handcracked radio
    handheld compass
    firestarter....plus bic lighter....plus matches
    fishing line/hooks kit
    firstaid kit
    med's/ water..
    100rds of 9mm ammo for G-26
    multitool
    whisle for calling for help
3x2 polished s.s. plate for signaling
pocket bible and pocket constitution.........any other suggestions on food, etc.

Melt them down to shoot zombies...it's the only way

Seroiously...I keep my hunting BP set up with pretty much what you see above. MRE stuff, like p nut butter and foil wraped crackers, just stuff I would really need ( minus beer ) o and + 1st aid stuff

THis way it's always on top, getting stuff replaced and checked

BTW , I won't be fleeing on foot, if it comes to that I gotta stand ( after kneeling )

This may sound silly to some, or maybe others just assume they are supposed to be there. I suggest Zip-Lock bags or the like. Even if you use them to put things in initially. They can be used for the obvious, containing things, however, they can also be used for collecting moisture from types of vegetation when water is hard to find. I think i saw something on tv where someone use a bag and water to focus the sun to start a fire (like a magnifying glass). But really, as you come across much needed items that may be small or you just need to make sure you hold onto and keep dry, these bags could very well be a big difference.

found 2 items over the weekend that I might add. 1st at BassPro as I was checking out, they had shredded beef jerky in a chewn tabacco container. Has good flavor. Best buy date is over a year. Therelight wieght, and take up hardly any space.

2nd item is at Academy, and is a complete fishing package. Callapsable pole, about 16 inches long, lures, hooks, etc. and it comes with its ownsoft pack. Its all self contained, so you could ether take it or leave it when you bugout, plus it free's up space in your backpack.
    Cost was $30.

In a sudden get out now scenario, just a couple things.

Gun, box bullets, knife, bic lighter, small plastic water bottle, small eye dropper bottle with clorox (water purification), any life saving meds you need, real small but powerful led light.

    That's it.

In reality--a gun and knife if nothing else.
