I have a Celestron Maxima 80 spotting scope I'm happy with, but the instability of the factory tripod is less than adequate. The problem stabilizing this large scope could, I think, be cured with a large C-clamp type mount attached to the shooting benchtop. Any advise on where to get or fabricate one is appreciated.

I would agree that the factory tripod really looks lightweight. If using your scope on a bench only, you might try the Gehmann clamp at http://www.champchoice.com/store/Main.aspx?p=ItemDetailOptions&item=G270.

I personally prefer a scope stand with a weighted base, upright rod with a weight at the bottom, and a sliding saddle head, can be used for bench, prone, sitting, standing, easily adjustable and steady. You can see a selection of these on the Champions Choice website. Both mine are the Freeland Bipod model, see them at http://www.championshooters.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=productdetails&virtuemart_product_id=766&virtuemart_category_id=32&Itemid=111. One was a gift, and I liked it so much I bought another.

A real scope stand like Blackhawk describes is a joy to use. If for bench use only, I have used just a pair of Jacobsen clamps in a pinch. Harbor freight has cheap knock offs. You want two of the longish ones. Clamp one to the bench and use only the lower jaw with the quick release slider from the second one to put on the bar. Put a 1/4" x 20 stud in the end of the wooden handle to mount your scope to. Done.

The tripod that came with mine was okay but not all that great so I started looking around for a heavier tripod. I have a buddy who is into photography and he suggested looking for a camera tripod on Craigslist. There were a few there and I ended up getting one for like 30 bucks. Much heavier and works great.
