Mainly because they're awesome, and deliver a massive bullet.

I would only shoot it sparingly, it would be mainly kept as a collectable or for potential self-defense (non-carrying, but in the car/house). I would probably sell it after I had it awhile.

Has anyone had any experience with one of these bad boys? Anything I should know about them, what to look for, etc?

It is a lot of money to plunk down though; about 800 is the lowest I've seen a used one for.

Are you set on an automatic? If not, I would go with a S&W Model 500. I sold mine to my brother after I had my fun. There is nothing like it. I highly suggest you look into one. They can be had for around $700 barely used. If you need help finding one, let me know.

If you are going big, I say go with the biggest (mass production, anyway).

P.S. You can shoot S&W .500 SPECIALS in it, too. They are powder puff rounds for plinking.

    Thanks! I'll look into it. . .

Not really set on anything, just have the urge to buy something ridiculous for a little while.

I had the same model with interchangeable sights and compensators (a waste of money in my opinion). That gun makes Dirty Harry its bitch!

I wouldn't get one just for the wow factor and sell it later. If you want wow factor AND want to save money I'd buy a Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 Casull and keep it.

The weakest .454 Casull load from Buffalo Bore will match Speer's Gold Dot in the .50AE, and the other loads that are even heavier bullet weights aren't much different.

    Speer Gold Dot .50AE

    300gr. (1550 fps / M.E. 1600 ft. lbs.)

    Buffalo Bore 300gr .454 Casull:

    300 gr. J.F.N.. (1550 fps / M.E. 1600 ft. lbs.)
    325 gr. L.B.T.- L.F.N. (1525 fps /M.E. 1678 ft. lbs.)
    360 gr. L.W.N.G.C. (1425 fps / M.E. 1623 ft. lbs.)
