If I am not mistaken, the Fed's will take over this crime investigation shortly, it is a fed crime to injure, rob, or interfere with a train in transport or in a yard, AMTRAK police are FED AGENTS. The Fed heat is coming down soon

    NOPD Press Release:
    Officer Hilal B. Williams
    New Orleans Police Department
    Public Affairs Division

New Orleans, LA – Members of the New Orleans Police Department are investigating the apparent shooting death of a 52-year-old male. The offense occurred shortly after 12:30 A.M., in the vicinity of Marshall Foch Street and Florida Boulevard on the Norfolk Southern Railroad.

According to investigators, Third District officers responded to a call of "shots fired", and upon their arrival found the victim lying inside an Intermodal Freight Train suffering from apparent multiple gunshot wounds to the body. Emergency medical technicians were summoned to the scene where the victim was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation revealed the train was travelling west and had come to a mandatory stop due to traffic delays on the railroad. As the crew awaited approval to move forward, the perpetrator boarded the train for what appeared to be robbery as a motive and in the process the conductor was killed. Subsequently, the perpetrator disembarked the train and fled in an unknown direction.

Currently, investigators are in the process of gathering evidence and information to identify the person(s) involved in this incident. Homicide Detective Orlando Matthews is in charge of the investigation and can be reached at 658-5300.

Citizens with information that can help solve this crime are asked to call CRIMESTOPPERS at 822-1111, toll-free 1-877-903-STOP(7867). You could receive a cash award of up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the responsible person(s). You do not have to give your name nor testify to receive the award.

This only a couple blocks from where i live. There is always some shady characters around the pumping station where Orleans avenue hits the train tracks by the interstate overpass. They really should increase patrols by this location to prevent stuff like this from happening. Its a shame to see a hardworking man taken out most likely by some low life scum bag for $20. And people think "this kind of stuff doesn't happen in Lakeview."

A Mississippi man was shot to death early Sunday aboard a CSX train that had stopped in Lakeview.
The victim, Fred Gibbs, 52, was conductor of the mixed-freight train, which was en route from Atlanta to New Orleans. Gibbs was identified by the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office.
Gibbs was was shot multiple times during what appears to have been an attempted robbery in the train's engine compartment, said Officer Hilal Williams, an NOPD spokeswoman.

You have to have some major balls to board an engine, know how to get into the crew cab without being noticed and start shooting. This isn't like walking into a storefront or opening a car door. Perp has to have been breaking into or in and out of a locomotive before.
