    Well my grandma said there wasn't a hole there until the bird showed up. She was pretty surprised the bird knew where to even dig as she said the ground was as solid as the rest of the yard until the bird started going at it :dunno:

    the ground where the hole was dug was likely pretty soft. my yard backs up to a swamp, and we get 2 or 3 nests in the yard each year. the female turtle actually expels water while she's digging to soften the dirt. covering it up is kind of awkward for them so it's not really packed down. armadillos (and dogs :rolleyes:) can smell them out but I'm not sure about birds.

    ...until they hatch and you have a yard full of baby water moccasins!

    One thought... I seem to remember from somewhere you can hold an egg up to a bright light and see what's in them if they're developed enough.


    Water moccasins are live birthing snakes.

    As are most poisonous snakes.
