I bought this second hand almost a year ago and never really played with it. Original owner claimed 100rds through it and wear marks make that believable. I had around 150 through it from the one time I took it out. Decided to play a little this afternoon and on the 5th round I got a face full of sparks and carbon. I don't always were eye protection buy man I was glad to have glasses on today. It looks like the spring on the slide hold open popped out place and jammed the slide slightly forward. Has anyone ever heard of this happening with a P22 before or am I looking at something out of the ordinary? If it is/was a known problem I'll contact Walther/S&W, if not I'll chock it up to bad luck pull the thing apart order a new spring and gently test it out for a several hundred rounds.

For those who may be interested, I finally decided to send the pistol in the S&W with pictures for an evaluation. I just didn't trust it, too many things didn't work. I they pistol was years out of warranty(though it obviously showed very little use). Got a phone call this week that they are sending me a brand new pistol. I have to cover the FFL fee but other than that they covered all costs. On a side note I picked from the list of FFLs they showed in my area based on name recognition without checking costs first; WOW some people charge way to much to handle a simple transfer. Oh well it least it is a company that I've had good experiences with in the past.

One of my friends has one that had a one time problem (we think) past spring.
The shot sounded different, didn't cycle the next round and the case was split, starting at the firing pin strike point. We chalked it up to ammo. He wont shoot federal in it now, but we both had that momentary doubt about whether or not it was the gun.
Glad you weren't hurt, and sounds like S&W did you right. I've had similar service with Ruger

Could have been a barrel ramp issue. After a round is fired, the slide travel to the rear ejecting the fire case. It hits the gun's slide stop, and travels forward, a round into the the barrel. If the bullet of the unfired round, hangs up in the last process, the slide will violently ride the round's rim. In the case of a rimfire " boom!!"
