Their is a fella at m4carbine.net who put together a matrix of AR features catagorized by manufacturer it may help. I roll my own so to speak so my opinons are biased but I don't care for Colt products or the uber expensive Noveske type guns. I still remember when Colt was droping out of spec garbage on the commerical market and hiding behind their reputation. I have seen alot of Bushmasters perform very well providing the gas key is staked. Cav Arms makes good guns that are hard to beat price wise. I don't like Olympic Arms or DPMS. That being said I shoot the **** out of my guns and bang them around alot so my needs are diffrent than somebody that wants to plink. For anybody thay wants to build their own I reccommend M&A parts kits and Spike's Tactical Lowers.

Yeah building an AR is not like trying to build a 1911. You don't need to be a metal worker or own a mill. If you stick to Mil-Spec uppers and Lowers your parts should drop in. One way to look at it is that you save the Firearms Excise Tax amount right off the top. When I build a gun I get to pick my own parts and I don't have to comprimise.

I did a TON of pricing before I bought mine, if you just want a base model rifle with brand name parts (not just a model1sales kit), you dont save much by building. If you want a rifle with all top-shelf parts, you can save by building and spread it out over time.

My next ones will be builds, mainly for the fun and experience. My first was a factory rifle because I didnt know if my agency would let me carry a home build.

Yeah but you got one of those drill press thingys. My defintion of metalwork includes any sort of file use. I will let the Gun Plumbers plumb. They can let me do the face shooting. All it takes to build an AR is popping some pins in and staking a gas key, which is a good thing because that is the extent of my ability.

Well I went in the store to buy some ammo today and came out with a new AR. I have been looking to buy another one, and today seemed like the day. I got a used Rock River Arms with a Wilson Combat target barrel. Sweet rig. My other is a S&W M&P.

On the subject of "Truck Guns"; I carry a CAV-Armr gun in my truck now, before that I had a Lever Action Guide Length 30-30. It did everything I would ever need a rifle to do except reload fast. You can find them cheap at gunshows and maybe Im wrong but I always thought it looked to farmer Joe fo the thugs to want to steal.

I thought most PDs required a factory rifle for patrol? At least that was the common consensus when I used to audit Police/Sheriff's Departments.
