I hope you recover your guns. Think about a small safe or anything to lock them if you have to leave them in your car. Maybe even an inexpensive set of handcuffs to lock them up at a minimum. Their only around low $20's.

Heed the advice of the LEO here... Things and inanimate objects aren't worth losing your freedom over. Now if they enter the home, it all may be a different story/situation.

I wouldn't give the bad guy the upper hand by leaving my firearms, unsecured, in the vehicle. Makes no sense to me.

You think you gave up a lot of advantage by leaving the guns in the car? Meaning, you walk out, they could already in the car with 2 guns. This give you any second thoughts about not taking your stuff inside?

My thoughts exactly. Why leave a gun in the car anyway.

Gun in hand when leave house and get in car. Never park in school zones...but on the rare occasion that i must get out of car and go somewhere leaving the gun in the car...I run a cable padlock through the trigger guard and then to the seat track. So yes...if a thief enters car and has something like a bolt cutter...I will lose my gun. Otherwise, I think I'm good to go.
Years ago...I would leave a gun in my car. But after having it stolen, I learned that lesson the hard way.

Do you leave a gun in your vehicle when u go to work. Do you leave guns in your home when you leave ? Do you park out side school zones that rare gun free zones ??

I think the comparison of keeping a gun on you and leaving it due to work regulations or legality vs leaving it in you car at home is a bad one. One is caused by trying to keep a job/not be a criminal, the other is caused by a lack of care or forethought.

I wasn't questioning to insinuate you did anything wrong, I was questioning you about how you said you would handle the situation. I was also questioning if this unfortunate event will change where you leave your guns when you are home and if you realized how easily this situation could've went very badly if you went out there to confront two armed men, or if they came inside and confronted you.

I'm not trying to start a fight with you, but I've been doing police work for a while and I've worked for two very large and busy municipalities. I've never heard of people using slim jim's to enter vehicle to commit burglaries. Either the window is smashed or entry is made through an unlocked door.

I'm not saying you aren't that one special case, I'm just saying from my experience, I've never heard of such thing happening.

It just makes nonsense to me to have to spend that much time to make entry into a vehicle. If I was in the business of burglarizing vehicles, I would pull handles only. If the door opens, jackpot. If not, keep walking, there's more cars ahead...

Coming in on this, what kind of vehicle is it? Have you tried to use an actual key to lock your vehicle? Are you sure it's a slim jim?

Reason I say, the F350s ( and maybe every other Ford truck lock) could be broken into extremely, extraordinarily, pathetically easy. The only way my husband knew was because the key lock was dented just slightly and his console cover was in the floor. (Further investigation someone was definitely in the truck, but he's a freak and notices new dents super quick)

No slim jim, but if he didn't look at the locking mechanism and just accepted that someone broke in, someone who didn't know better would say slim jim.

No evidence to leave behind for passerbys. Shut the door and it looks normal.

I don't know how I would handle it, it did cross my mind before which is why I don't leave one in my truck anymore overnight. I too would leave at odd time in the morning, and didn't like the idea of someone shooting me with my own gun, that would suck.

Even though I participated in the discussion, this wasn't JR's point at all.

What you should do is stay inside, call the cops. You completely overlooked JRs advice to keep yourself safe.

    Period.
    End of story.

Whatever is in the car isn't worth whatever you take on by confronting him.

FWIW, I used to have a 98 S-10 (don't EVER get one, another story), and the key would get into the majority of s-10's, cavaliers, ect of near year models. I've used that trick a number of times to help people who locked their keys in the car, and it worked about 2 out of 3. Door only, not ignition. Perhaps they got into your vehicle a similar way? Do you own a Chevy/GMC product from around this time?

I stay inside and call the police. If I go out there and something happens to me (killed or rendered helpless) my wife and child are now in danger with no defense. The safety of my family is paramount.

ETA: I've been in more than a few fights with people breaking into things while I'm working. When I'm off my family are my priority.

I said this in the thread about the guy who shot the kid in his yard by his vehicle.
