My Dads favorite thing to tell me growing up when I was whining for something that other people had.

"People in Hell want ice water and they ain't ever getting it! Just like you ain't getting ....."

The other was, "You can pay now or you can pay later". Meaning work hard when you are young. If not you will be doing it when you are old.

Be not the first by whom the new are tried, Nor the last to lay the old aside.

Don’t hold on to a mistake just because it took you a long time to make it.

Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s bad, and just because new doesn’t mean it’s good.
That works for car parts, ideas & people.

When asked by someone " How u doing?? my usual reply would be ""on top of the dirt"".. If they ask for clarification reply ""beats the alternative"" ..... "rather be seen than viewed" ...... drill sgt.
Another response " every day on the green side of the grass is a good day"

T-Rigger's "Tenents of Construction" ... developed from over 50 years as a hands-on Architect

    1. Everything costs more than you think it will.
    2. Everthing takes longer than you think it will.
    3. Nothing is as easy as it looks.
    4. Once construction starts, there is no such thing as a "SIMPLE" change.
    5. Cheap is always ugly.
    6. Ugly is always in stock.
    7. The cheapest price is like hard drugs - once exposed to it - they can't get off of it.

"If your feet hurt, your whole body will hurt." My dad used to live by this one, he never skimped, money or time/effort looking for and trying on shoes, and I've found this to be true myself over many years working on my feet for long stretches. Find and buy quality footwear, miserable shoes will make you miserable.

Another version your response reminded me of.

Don’t skimp on good boots or a good bed, because when you get out of one you’ll soon be getting in the other.
