I disagree with this sports bud. All of my USGIs drop freely in training and combat. It's never been an issue having them drop freely for me or my squad members. Even diving against stone or walls, or running around my truck getting the f out of the way of contact. I haven't smashed or broke a mag, even in an ied blast. I've seen machine gun belts cook off in a pressure switch ied explosion but not the USGI mags. I trust them 110%.
It wasn't from my experience it was from the mouth of a friend who just got out after several deployments... most failures happen because of the mags, if you properly maintain a USGI it will be fine, but one can say that a Pmag does take more of a beating... I am betting that when I am going through basic I will be using ancient USGI mags, and from what I understand the M16's at FT. Jackson are even older... but they do work great...(somewhat...)

What he said. In fact, you're more likely to have problems with polymer mags dropping free than aluminum, depending on the lower. Some run a little tighter in the magwell and can present tolerance stacking issues combined with poly mags that are generally a little oversized compared to GI.

There's not a single thing wrong with quality GI mags, and Pmags don't do anything magical. I simply don't use the GI because there's a few minor features I like better on the poly mags and they don't really cost more. That said if magical elves came and swapped all of my poly mags for GI mags while I slept tonight, I certainly wouldn't cry about it.

Since we're discussing it anyway, can any of you lame GI mag guys verify which are G2G? I know lots of guys trust Colt, Okay Ind and D&H. Any others?

I just go with what i know works, my personal experiences. It's all I know about! You'll love that M16 and hate her all the same :)
I have limited experience with AR's I plan on getting a 6920 when I get out of BCT and drilling with it, and probably be getting only Pmags, and since I will be guard those Pmags will probably end up feeding my issued weapon as well...

Curt, I've only shot Colt and Okay industries. Both were green to green man.

Mind you I was a combat medic, not an 11B, sorry if that disqualifies me folks!

I'd get the anti tilt followers if you go with USGI mags. I just got a surefire 60 round mag. Fits nicely and is about the same thickness as the mag well with my ergo mag well "grip" on it. I'm going shot it tonight and see how it does.

One thing to think about why to get Pmags or other high quality polymer mags, is if you train with your AR the mags will be getting tossed around, you will be dropping the mags, and they may be flying with rounds still in them, they may get stepped on, or worse... And a USGI mag is easily bent up or destroyed were as a Pmag keeps on ticking, also I have heard from good sources that when the mag needs out of the magwell the Pmags like to fly out better and faster than a USGI one...

You would be wrong. It seems like the metal provides less friction than the plastic, so GI mags and lancers drop the best. I had a tight lower, would drop metal mags just fine, wouldn't drop Pmags.
