either a CZ75 SP-01 or a HK P30. Why: Well, because they both have excellent ergonomics and are well refined/engineered.

Do you shoot that in open? I hear it's a big disadvantage to have the lower capacity of 40 vs a 9mm major or 38 super. What are your thoughts?

I think you will shoot an M&P ProSeries 5" .40 the best - one with 4 mags set up for limited with a couple holsters so you can find the one you prefer - and you are in luck - I have one FOR SELL at a special price if you are interested

Best thing you can do is go to one of those gun shows where there's about every type of HG under the sun available for your use. I found a nice 1911 is perfect for my hand, the trigger makes a huge difference over glocks.
