I am in Richmond this week on a project and got bored, so I went to the local range. :)

    http://www.dominionshootingrange.com/

They had well over 100 guns to try:

I normally carry a full size Colt 1911, but have been seeing a lot of posts here and on other boards asking what is the most popular CCW weapon, and the G19 comes up a lot, so I rented one of these. I have always wanted to try a Hi-Power, so I rented one of these as well. The HP fit my hand really well, the trigger was very similar to the 1911, and I put 50 rounds on paper at 10 yards. Almost all were within the 8 - 10 ring, and it was a lot of fun :D

Then I put another 50 downrange with the G19. The gun did not feel comfortable in my hand, and the trigger was uncomfortable as well. I just couldn't develop a feel for when it was going to fire. The rounds were all over the paper with less than 10 in the 8 - 10 rings. Not fun :(

Maybe this was a bad weapon, or just the wrong model for me, but if it is typical of Glocks, I just couldn't see owning one for self defense. I will be looking into obtaining a HP.

    Just my .02

I'm equal opportunity, and enjoy 1911's, glocks, HK's, S&W's, and Springers. I will say, each one has it's place.

Okay, let me put my flame suit on. I Don't like the feel of the Glock either! I know that is sacrilegious to some of the gun community, but I never got the feel for the ones I shot....but others love them. So what does that tell you? When it comes to hand guns there is not a "one size/brand/model" that fits all.

I like the Beretta M-9 and can shoot my best with that handgun, my best friend shoots the Glock 34 and shoots his best with that gun.....have us swap guns and it's not pretty!!! hahaha

BTW - I did shoot the HK VP9 -- very nice.....maybe a Christmas present for me.

Personally the full size 1911 is a perfect shooter for me. It feels great, points naturally and I'm pretty accurate with it. Realistically though the glock is more suited for my intended purpose and I have no problems hitting what I'm aiming at. It's a give and take for sure.

A grip force adapter brings the grip angle more in line with a 1911 design grip. I agree G's are not for everyone.
I however love my 19 but have never shot any of the higher priced guns. The Glock is the VW Beetle (older model, not the gay new ones) that is not pretty nor super comfortable but tends to be reliable enough.

I love target shooting with 1911's, but can shoot quicker with a glock in 9mm than a 1911 in .45. I can shoot more accurately with an HK USP SD/Tactical

I was a 1911 guy, back when I didn't really shoot much. When I decided to get more serious I approached a bit like a research project. What's the "best" system for modern day? Stiker fired. What is light weight? Glock. What has the best reputation for reliability? Glock. What has the most aftermarket support/products aligned with it? Glock. What feels best in my hand... Not Glock.

I bought a used one to try it, and at first it was different. The grip angle deal and all. After a while it became natural and now the 1911 feels a bit odd when I pick it up. It really is a training issue, but that's something you just decide you want to go with or not.

Having said all that... The 19 is the least favorite of my Glocks and gets shot the least. 43, 17, and 21 are all great. The 19 just doesn't feel right in my hand. If you are a 1911/.45 guy, try a 21. I shoot my 17 wayyyy more (due to cost), but honestly the 21 is my favorite. It is a sweet shooting gun!

I like 1911's as a novelty. I'm die hard Glock, but I will say I had to get used to them. Especially going from Government size 1911's.

I'm not a glock fan either. I've shot several and they're ok, but not anything to get excited about. They go bang every time but I don't like the feel.

I have a shield also. I like it, for what it is. I don't mind striker fired. I don't like the glock trigger.

My 1911 is my first choice.

Just curious how long it took you (anyone) to get used to your first handgun? It's easy to dismiss something new and different without remembering how long it took to get the level of skill you have with something similar. Not saying glocks aren't a bad match for some folks, but it seems like a lot of folks are quick to dismiss a new gun based on not being able to immediately perform with it as well as their favorite.

I'm in the same boat. I am not a Glock fan at all. They seem OK but I simply can not get used to the trigger or especially the grip angle.

Buckmark was first, and no issues. 1911 came later. I've never done well w/ revolvers or long heavy trigger pulls (still have a 2nd gen s&w auto that I'm not thrilled with). I can shoot them, I just have to work for it. I like a consistent trigger with a surprise break...

I wasn't a Glock fanboy for a long time, I have owned 7 Gen 2 and Gen 3 Glocks and sold them all. I loved shooting the GSSF matches but the slides cut the web of my hand. I grew up on revolvers and 1911's. Competed with all of them. It wasn't till a friend of mine let me shoot his new Gen 4 G34 that I decided to give Glock another try and with the help of fellow member JBP55 who installed a Lonewolf trigger assy. in my G34 and a Vanek in my G19 that I was finally able to shoot them. It did take me a bit to get used to them again, but I'm ok Carrying the G19 and competing with the G34. I normally carry an XDs or M&P9c so I have been rotating my carry guns to include the G19 and Sig P320. All my M&P's (3) and XD's (2) have aftermarket triggers and sears. The P320 is my best stock gun for carry but could use some trigger work too. You just have to make up your mind to learn how to shoot any gun buy practicing and learning the trigger. I hated my HK45LEM, I can shoot 1 to 1.5 inch groups all day long with my 1911, but couldn't shoot less than a 5" group with the LEM. Finally one day I decided to sit down and learn how to shoot that trigger and after it was all said and done, I could shoot a 2" group with it from then on. The 1911/2011 will always be my favorite but I now enjoy shooting all my striker fired guns too.

I am a J frame fanatic. Been shooting them since I was 14....I'm 47 now. I like Glocks. I shoot them well and I can depend on them. I shoot my J frames better than I shoot Glocks.....it's just what I'm used to. I still like Glocks.....but I will always love my snubbies!

i too love the nostalgic, look and feel of a 1911. The accuracy of a fitted, 1911 is hard to beat. (especially in 10mm)

but I find that I tend to baby, steel frame pistols more than the polymers.

Glocks offer simplicity, reliability, capacity and combat accuracy. oh don't forget parts interchangeability and availability.

I am not sure why but the gen 4 glock 21 feels the best in my hand (as compared to other glocks). I also like the grip of the p series sigs and like the P227 grip the most (compared to other p series sigs). I like the grips of the hk guns and can shoot the LEM equiped hk guns relatively well. I think that most people who have tried shooting different guns like or really like the 1911 trigger....including me.
