My dad bought a Stihl back in 1982...we cut tons of firewood and I'm still using it today for cutting firewood every season....just done regular maintenance on it. My brother has burned up two (a poulan and homelite). I have a small Craftsman saw for topping and trimming limbs that has run well for that purpose.

Just burned up a light duty Husky, (made by poulan come to find out) replaced it with a stihl upon the recomendation of the mechanic. He sells both, but recomended the stihl for homeowner saws. He said on the commercial models they are what and what.

Get the biggest engined saw you can find and stick the shortest bar that will fit on it. The 18" and 20" chains come in more aggressive profiles than any of the longer chains, cutting faster and lasting longer. The big chains generally only come in "finish cut" profiles which are slow biters to keep the chain from stretching.

If, for some reason, you think a long chain is faster than a short, get both and compare. A short will cut a tree down faster in 2 cuts than a long will cut in 1.

I would recommend Stihl for those who expect longevity, but the biggest difference between the brands (besides complexity and quality) is the forgiveness of stupid mistakes. Using a 16" Poulan Pro I can out-cut your average "hurricane Joe" with a 30" nitro-powered Eviscerator Saw.

I agree. It's not the size of the wave, it's the motion of the ocean
