    George,

That would be would be a great start. A good way to learn the rules & procedures is to attend a few practice sessions at The Range in Baker on Monday & Wednesday evenings. You will learn the safety rules and what is expected of a competitor.

The people who regularly go to these practice sessions are also the people who regularly attend matches. You get a chance to meet and greet some of your fellow competitors in a smaller and more relaxed situation than at a match. Knowing a few people who will be at the first match you attend can make it much easier for a new shooter.

You can also see what people use for gear before you go out and buy anything. Learn from our mistakes.

ETA: I shoot rifle silhouette sometimes too. It is also a good group of people.

We used to have a table at some of the gun shows to educate folks about our matches and to draw interest. Have you done that? You got to go where the people are and drag them kicking and screaming to get their attention.

We are checking into setting up a table at Cabelas soon. I advertised our matches here on a monthly basis for over a year with hardly any response. Also published an article in the LSA newsletter. I am starting a new range in Natchitoches Parish next month and have been distributing fliers locally there. Time will tell if that effort will be successful. Here is a photo of the new range.
