    QUESTION:

My 13 pound Dachshund just bit her first toad in the backyard. She started making gagging noises and started foaming at the mouth.

I grabbed her and proceeded almost immediately to begin rinsing her mouth out. I did this for approx 3-5 minutes.

The foaming is gone and so is the gagging. What other behaviors do I need to look out for tonight?

Am I in the safe zone here? Some more info would be appreciated as this is the first time I've ever seen this happen.

Call Metairie Small Animal Hospital on Met road. They're pretty good about giving info w/out dragging you in unnecessarily...

I was so happy w/ their night vet we left our old vet to see Dr. Rene Baumer there...

toads have a distasteful skin secretion as a natural defense against predators. I don't think you have anything to worry about. It did what is was meant to do. Made your dog release it...and I doubt your dog will do that again.

The all night vet in baton rouge wouldn't sell me vitamin k when my dog got a hold of rat poison in the garage withou paying for a $120 emergency visit. I am glad there are decent all night vets out there.

    STOP panicing......that is very normal!
That is the toads defense mechanism. IF I called a vet everytime my wifes dachshund chewed a toad I would have to keep the vet on retainer!

HE/SHE will be fine! It only takes most dogs once or twice then they will leave toads alone, well the dachshund's are NOT quite as smart as MOST dogs....OR they are just that damn mean they are looking for payback each time!

Quickly get a piece of white calk. Now draw a pentagram on the floor in your living room. Light candles at each of it's five points. Why? Hell don't don't ask why right now. Just get to the choppa if you want your dog to live!

Seriously I have a replacement dog I'll send over if yours isn't OK. But I believe it'll be fine.

just googled it to put you at ease.

I imagine the toad was a typical American or Fowler's toad. Everyday yard variety...yes? no prob.

    btw...it was not a marine toad...you don't have them...and I doubt your dog could pick it up...:D

Not overly worried. Just wanted to make sure because the dog is very small and it was a decent size toad.

And yes, it was a typical American toad, I'm fairly certain.

Same thing happened to my Scotty a week ago. She was fine an hour or so later but acted real loopy at first. Sounds like you handled it well. No need to run to the Vet just yet. I'd keep a watchful eye for diarrhea, more vomiting, lethargic mood, and labored breathing.

if in doubt, half a benadryl will help with any lingering effects..

1 mg per lb is dose..

Sounds about right. Dosage for my 130 lbs doberman (years ago) was 6 (25mg) tablets... (I think 6 tablets would probably kill me but it didn't even make him sleepy...)

My lab hasn't had any side effects from playing w/ toads. Then again she isn't 12 pounds either!
