This should be put in the context of "What other Constitutional Rights are they deprived of ?"

Once it becomes OK to deprive any group of rights, we are on a slippery slope. Recall how Hitler, etc, started out !

Of course, anyone with violent criminal history and propensity or likelihood to commit further crime should be disarmed.

So...if a person convicted of shooting another in anger were sentenced to 10 years and then released, he should not have the RKBA ??

I am in agreement with that on case by case...if the judge or jury in that specific case feels that circumstances warrant then they can suspend 2A rights, or what ever they feel relevant.

Should a dummy that steals 5K dollars and serves his time lose his RKBA...no, time served pays the bill IMO

I think there were stipulations for property ownership before being allowed to vote. Had something to do with a poll tax that was found unconstitutional...I could be mistaken.

When I moved to Gonzales in 1967, only property owners voted on real estate tax issues. When I went to the poll, I was given a slip of paper with my property value on it plus blanks to vote yes or no.

It had nothing to do with poll taxes.

I think they need to lose their life. I dont give a **** if they breath again..

I don't know. There are many instances of violent crime I don't condone, but it doesn't mean they lose their life or voting rights.

Beating the hell out of a guy banging your wife in your bed while you're busting your ass working to support said wife.... Yeah. Not smart on the guy's part but can you blame him?

Women shooting their ex husbands because there is a strong indicator of abuse that the system has failed to recognize... It has happened.

Beating the hell out of a sibling who in turn beat the hell out of your elderly parent... Again, has happened.

While all three scenarios I would not condone, and many like them, I don't damn them to death or revocation of all rights either. Likewise, as Vanilla Gorilla pointed out, just because you're not a land owner, does not mean you're not a strong supporter of the US Government and self sufficient, productive adult. Blanket statements and inflexible laws of this nature might help many of the issues we have, it hurts quite a few as well.

When I was a 20 year old soldier I owned no property. Why shouldn't I have been allowed to vote?

In this particular circumstance, Gorilla.. (It sounds strange to me to call another man Vanilla.)

You would have as our dear leader has said, "Skin in the game." being a person willing to give up their life in defense of our country. You should be allowed to vote.

However, people who do not pay taxes, own property, or have some tangible substance other than drawing air and being 18 should not be.

Not really following the property ownership being necessary to vote concept? Would it not rule out a large group of individuals including a good portion of our military?

Don't follow it, it makes no sense! Unless it is about raising property taxes.

You shouldn't have. Meaning you should be able to. Unless it is about raising property taxes and you own no property.

This is where I think I lay. Unfortunately or fortunately; our Constitution allows for EVERY "US Citizen" to vote. As for the question in the first place. Do the crime, do the appropriate time to fit the crime, get out, fresh start. Unless it is about raising property taxes and you own or inherit no property.

What I would like to see is in order to vote, you must at least be able to say what the three branches of the federal government are before you can register for federal voting, maybe throw in knowing how many Senators and Congressmen there are too. Any civics whatsoever would be better than what we have now. Don't forget Democrats actively tried to allow incarcerated felons to vote a few years back. They really are shameless scum.

What happens when the legislature redefines what a "violent crime" is to include things like shoplifting or refusal to pay taxes?

So you want to return to the 1950s? They tried it, and it was rife with people that took advantage of this system to issue BS tests and prevent honest good people from voting. Forgive me, but while something might sound good in your head, you have to consider how it can be tampered with in execution.

Personally I don't think our problem with elections lies with the ignorant, socialistic mooching drug addicts, thugs, rapists and murdering thieves. It lies in the common home owning, employed uncaring ever day citizen. Middle of the road, unaffected, don't care, doesn't pertain to them, that's somebody else's concern, never happen to me folks. When they begin to realize YES, it is their problem and it DOES affect them, then we can have an election that matters.

Dead people cast votes from coffins now?!? Now, the Dogshitocraps don't even want people to have to identify themsleves?!? Today, fake ID's, birth certificates, and SSN's are easier to get than VD?!?

IDK: We can do it any way we want, but having a say with no stake; in elections that could negatively affects those that do, will doom this country. Just look at birth trends in the US. Every ethnic group, minority, immigrant, etc. is having more children than the average milk toast family.

BTW: A Milk Toast family is the hardworking (maybe both spouses work), get an education, live within one's means bunch, and I don't care what race they are.

In reality until voter fraud and the electoral college are under control fair and balanced voting is pretty much not a reality anyways...but a good start is to make voters somewhat literate and somewhat involved in life besides figuring the best way to suck the public tit

true. I'd like to see an election without the electoral college. I'm all for the welfare system as it was originally intended but we've become much too socialistic.

*blinkblink* Demos are pushing for nonID at the polls? How'd I miss that???!

I just think if we limit voting more than it currently is, you're going to end up with honest people not being allowed to vote. Its going to take bigger solutions than an simple restriction to fix.

Don't know if you are being facetious or not, but Holder wants to sue states that wish to enforce the picture ID at the polls. Even though Supreme Courts have upheld the practice. Another great way to use the US Justice Department to promote a morally bankrupt and corrupt agenda.

As for deterring honest people? Fair enough! I get that.

No, I was being serious. I had not heard of anything concerning Voter ID. Wow. I need to go back to the beginning of this thread and reread it with that in mind. I don't think testing is going to work, but Acorn sure as hell showed the failing in our current voting situation. I'll grant you that.

Having to own property to vote is ridiculous, its getting more and more difficult to purchase a house, banks aren't lending as freely. Now I will say this though I don't think you should be allowed to vote if on section 8, or hud, unless you are a disabled veteran or spouse of a disabled veteran. The majority of the people on it enjoy their free ride and will continue voting in legislation that allows them to live free.

The problem isn't that too many people vote that shouldn't. The problem is too many people don't vote that should.
If it is not a presidential election, you're lucky to get 40%, and often times its below that. Even on a large presidential election you're lucky to hit 60-65%.
The system works, we're just not using it. It's like you and your friends pushing a brand new car to work every morning, instead of getting in and driving it, and all the while complaining that the car sucks.
