I have an old model .357/9mm convertible 4 5/8" barrel, and I absolutely love it. It appears that you posted a picture of a 6 1/2" barrel version though I'm pretty sure the ejector rod housing on the 4 5/8" barrel is almost to the muzzle.

I don't have the box, but ruger shows the mfg date of '78 per serial #s, doubt it was a plastic one
