I was at nicks yesterday and noticed a beautiful FAL rifle. Older guy was nice enough to let me fondle it. I noticed his ssn engraved on the receiver. I asked about it and he said he does that to all his firearms ro prove ownership. Seems kinds odd to me. Anyone else seen or done this?

The derp was strong with that guy.

I've seen my fair share of 870's with phone numbers carved into them, never a SSN, and never professionally engraved.

That was not totally uncommon in the 1950's and 1960's.

I could see putting an identifying # (NOT your ss#) somewhere inside the gun. inside slide? In the bedding of a rifle?

phone # would work. Maybe an IP address?

You could put your driver's license number on your items. LA Dr Lic 0000745125 for example. Can't law enforcement look up a driver's lic number if stolen items are recovered?

But firearms already have numbers of identification stamped on them. They are known as serial numbers

Bill of sale or receipt with the gun's serial number on it. Keep in safe place. That's all you need.

Yeah ... it's an "old school" thing. I've seen it many times and even know of a guy who got one back from a pawn shop years ago because it had his "mark". That said, I've never done it and hate any type of non-factory markings ...
