So after 25 years, I've finally decided it's time to kick the can.

I know it's going to be difficult, because honestly, I love the stuff.

I can think of a million reasons why I should quit, but I just enjoy it.

Any of you have any tips or hints to make things any easier?

Buddy of mine just gave up dipping. He absolutely loved it. First thing in the morning and last thing at night kind of love. When he decided to quit the ONLY thing that kept him motivated he said was when he got to wanting a dip he would google "lip cancer" and/or "gum cancer" on his iPhone and look at a pic. Said that did the trick and he finally got over the craving.

Now he's addicted to this stuff:

Much better he said. Course now he will probably have high blood pressure from all the salt in the jerky. :)

Dude, if you find any, please tell me. I've been trying to quit for months. 10 years in myself. I enjoy the hell out of it myself.

I did see something interesting that I've been meaning to try. There is some beef jerky that is cut like long cut. You could try slowly mixing that in instead of dip, and over the course of a few cans be dipping straight beef instead of skoal. It might work.

I started chewing tobacco then switched to dipping and that's been going on for just over 10 years. I've quit about a dozen times for a week or so. So much of it is just something to do, when I'm working on something put in a dip and get in there, looking forward to that after lunch dip(that's the best one) hell I enjoyed it. I've always known the dangers and don't know what made me quit this time but its been just over 6 months and I have no issues with wanting to go back or people dipping around me.
No magic bullet and I can't really offer any tips but that's my little story.

You can do it, Lead. My brother used Skoal for 25+ years and walked away, cold turkey- and never looked back.

And he really did love it. He was going through at least a can a day. He just made his mind up that enough was enough- and stuck to it.

My dad started chewing the same flavor in gum instead not that it works all the time he will occasionally get a can but it's much better than it used to be. Really is a gross habit when you think about it not to mention the medical problems it can cause.

When I said drugs, I was serious. Have you considered it?

I dipped and smoked and quit both going on 5 years.

The key for me was a few things.

    1st - Education
-Learn why you are addicted. Learn about the ingredients and how those ingredients effect your body. Learn just how dangerous it is to partake in these manufactured drugs. B/c that is exactly what they are. In fact they are more chemically manufactured and closer in that regards to METH than Weed. Well more so for cigarettes but think about that.....

    2nd - Control
-Using Tobacco products, you give up control. It owns you. It runs your life b/c it tells you what to do when
and when you don't do it, it makes your body send signals that are pretty hard to ignore.
Don't play the "Oh I could quit" routine with us, we were there to, and that's horse **** lol. Everyone says they could quit, until they try, then it's humble pie ;)

3rd - Money. Adding an average $125+ a month BACK into your Bank Account could provide financial relief in other areas of your budget.....Like Sportsman/Shooting Gear or even better GYM Membership, which is what most folks seem to do with the left over money.

In the end I HATED the fact that an inanimate object controlled me. After learning why i was addicted and the incredibly horrible health hazards(Really learning though, not Dipping is bad Mkay  ) after really learning, I developed the attitude that I would not be controlled by a substance.

I got on the Chantix Program and Quit cold turkey. That was 5 years ago.

I had smoked for 16 yrs.

Now dipping was twice as hard but I used the same method. Educated myself, pondered on the financial and health impact. Took the Chantix and quit.

Best time to quit is Sunday Night. Have you last dip/smoke etc,
wake up Monday and go to work a new person and never look back.

    Cheers!

Good luck on kicking the habit. I have tried on a few occasions and went back. I know that I too need to quit, but dang, it's good stuff.
Hopefully it won't be too bad for you, let us know how it goes, heck, I could use the encouragement to quit the stuff myself.

The last time I tried to stop cold turkey, was a about 7 years ago when I was still working offshore. Anyways, I got home after my hitch and told the wife that I was going to quit dipping......A few days later while working in the yard in a hopeless attempt to keep my sanity, I see my wife drive up in her car, she gets out and throws a can of dip at me and screams, "Here you grumpy b*stard, take a damn dip." :exnbp:

That was the last time I tried...

I started dipping long after I had quit smoking **** sticks. Mostly for softball and fishing. Started to notice my teeth (the only "real" ones I will ever have) were getting ever so slightly loosened and my gums were receding. Dentist knew immediately I was chewing because of the staining; and reminded every time. I was also getting really bad heartburn from the drip. Even started to feel the burn at the gum line.

Started questioning the logic and the rationale behind it. The conclusion was easy; it was retarded! Quit Cold T! Never looked back.

Good Luck to you! 25 years on it is a long time to purge. You may need some pharmaceutical help. :dunno:

Now y'all got me thinking. I'm headed offshore tomorrow and I'm thinking I may go without any dip. Can't buy any out there.
I'm addicted bad to the stuff too. Last night after getting laid the first thing I did after finishing was roll over and put a pinch in my mouth. Real attractive.

This may seem a bit unorthodox, but the next time; instead of putting it in your mouth, jam a wad of it deep in your a$$hole. I guarantee when you start to feel how bad it burns there, you will start to consider what it's doing to the inside of your mouth. :D

Chantix is supposed to be very helpful. It helps curb the cravings and reduces the reward if you cave (cuts the reinforcement). Talk to your doc. That said, the vast majority of people fail quitting multiple times before they succeed, so keep at it.

Terrible habit. People keep mentioning oral cancer, but it's also associated with pancreatic cancer, and that is probably one of the absolute WORST ways to go.

It may help you to lay out a 2x2 table

    A) Benefits of continuing the habit
    B) Drawbacks of continuing the habit
    C) Benefits of quitting
    D) Drawbacks of quitting

It sounds like you're already pretty decided on quitting, but might be helpful to have to look at if your motivation wanes

How do you lube a pinch of dip? Or do you just rely on the fact that there is no grip left in you're bung hole?
