Not sure where you are at, but get in touch with Jason (PelicanFirearms) on here. He has the best connections at PSA. Or you can go the route that VG suggested, can't go wrong with Colt.

We carry brand new entry level AR-15's starting around $800 all the time.
We understand that most shooters want an entry level AR that they can customize themselves

    We currently have Core 15 M4 in .223/5.56 NATO - $835.00

    and a Stag Arms Model 3 AR-15 in .223/5.56 NATO with Diamondhead Versa-Rail handguard -- $845.00

I had a Colt with the larger pin hole for while. Really wasn't that big of a deal. The pin is like 10 bucks, which is basically free in the gun world.

Entry AR on a budget- I'd suggest saving a little cash on the rifle and spend it on training, as well as ammo & mags (as mentioned). If you really dig it, you can make gradual upgrades along the way.

You get a true mil spec gun, built by people who know how to do it properly. And you get a gun that's a proven commodity.

I don't think the guy is going to be trudging through the mud fighting off terrorists. He's looking for something entry level (hence the title) to put holes in paper at the range. Different strokes for different folks.

He never said he just wanted to put holes in paper at the range.

And some people prefer to spend a little extra money and buy a much more capable rifle. Just because you're not in combat doesn't mean a quality weapon is not a good investment. For example, a lot of people are beginning to see the value in training to use their firearms. We have a lot of folks at classes that are disappointed in their budget ARs after they break under moderate use.

Buy once, cry once. Buying guns that only work for range use is stupid.

ETA: PSA is a good gun for the money though, and sort of an anomoly. Still, if the TOTAL budget is $1000, I'd grab a PSA. If the budget for the rifle alone is $1000 and there's extra money for optics, mags, ammo etc than I'd go a different route.

Don't you guys have a PSA loaner that has held up pretty well? I was under the impression they were Milspec and great for the price point.
