So what does being a member of IDPA or USPSA offer?

To support the sport and, i know being a member of uspsa gives you access to a magazine, you get to track your classifier scores online and other stuff. i'm sure some more seasoned shooters can chime in with more.

also, i do think you have to be a member to shoot the higher level (non-local) matches.

Joining the local clubs helps support us. Insurance is expensive and usually required by the ranges we use, along with equipment, props, paper, etc. These clubs are non-profit but do take a few dollars to run.

Joining the national organizations allows you to track your progress against others in the nation with a set of skills that will be developing. You get the magazines and such, and some dealers even give discounts to USPSA members on purchases as well...

Also, don't worry about "where" you finished. We all started at the bottom too and stayed there for a long time. It's about "how" you finish. Were you safe? Were you smooth? Did you learn to reload and move and shoot under "some" presssure? We screw that up all the time, but it's normal, and there's always something to learn. I still screw up royally ALL the time.

    As Scooter said... don't be.

There are always widely differing skill levels present at these matches; assuming that you will be the "worst" shooter is usually a wrong assumption. Ask flamatrix99 about that.

The camaraderie (sp?) is good, and the shooting is quite interesting. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who carries a gun regularly (cop or "civilian"), needs to particiapte in some of these... especially the IDPA ones.

I carried a handgun professionally for 30 years, with sporadic continuing training. Now that I'm retired, I use the IDPA matches to "keep my hand in", so to speak. And once this freakin' heat breaks, I'll come to a few USPSA matches as well.

There are plenty of us who muddle along in the middle of the pack... we don't win, we don't stand out, but we don't embarass ourselves either. You'll fit right in.

    .

Who doesn't embarrass themselves? I do a pretty darn good job and you have the gall not to notice the only thing I excel in?

    (sarcastic) Thanks, Steve.

I've been thinking of doing a match for a while now... to be honest, I'm pretty intimidated :o. A couple of questions: How long does a match last? Are matches always held on Sundays?

This is probably one of the most honest post in quite a while. Many feel like this but you are man enough to admit it. I myself felt the same way and attended my first match last December and now I am hooked. This feeling will not last long and the competition will undoubtly bring out some weaknesses you have in your gun handling that will not come to the forefront on a square range. You will beable to work on some of these weaknesses that you may not even know you have at home with dry fire practice. Trust me you will improve your shooting skills at a very accelerated pace. Every match I feel I learn something and I feel I have improved immensely in the past 8 months. Just last week was my best finish to date. Come joing the fun. And as others have stated even if you do not have the equipment to play do not let that stop you. Just ask. I have a complete EXTRA set up that if I am going to a match and someone needs they are welcome to. Just buy ammo, I loned it to a friend so that he could shoot just last week.

I have to echo what Bannon said. I think my first match was his second or third or something and everything he said is spot on.

    Come out and have fun.

Nothing but reloads for me. Only my 9mm is loaded down to minor power factor. 40, 45, & 38super are all loaded up to major power factor

All but a few shoot reloads. Some of the Production guys will shoot 9mm factory loads, when they can find some cheap stuff.

Remember new shooters the old hands always wear crotchless panties to shoot competition. It makes you shoot better or something.

And Dave will be the one wearing his crotchless panties on the outside of his clothes. See some really do embarrass themselves as well as us when they shoot.
