What did y'all think it was even going to affect? Outside of some /professional/ forums I've never seen functions like this be more than a circle jerk and way for people to feel good about downvoting someone they disagree with, like they win an argument by doing so.

In professional industry forums, I've seen it used to establish the "Subject matter experts" and heavy contributors, as well as allowing to set a threshold for post-viewing and eventually bequeathing additional access/benefits like software beta testing or invitations to events.

I don't really see any of that being applicable or useful to Bayoushooter. We don't have the quality contributors on the level of a professional forum, we don't have access/benefits where it'd be of concern, we're small enough that we -know- the people who contribute well, already - don't need a rating to show anything, and the userbase is mostly a bunch of slack jawed yokels who wouldn't know how to vote intelligently in the first place, or how to keep the intent of it in mind beyond their personal aims.

So far the administration has given no suggested guidelines as to how the users should vote so as to get the best results from the system, either. There's no declaration of intent other than what people have assumed, and by my observation of posts that say "x of y users found this helpful" it is merely used as "BLAHHHH I DONT LIKE YOUUUUUU" or "YEA, HE AGREES WITH WHAT I SAID" or "LOL HE INSULTED OBAMA/SOCIALISTS/DEMOCRAPS LOL UPBOAT!"

So it looks pretty ******* stupid as it is, right now, to be blunt.

Y'all are way overthinking the reputation thing. It's a simple tool to help identify those who are helpful and those who are trolling or give out bad info. It's not to help moderate, that's what the report feature is for. Simply put, if you see a post that was helpful throw em a thumbs up. If you see a post that's harmful report it. The thumbs down would fall somewhere between "meh" and something worth reporting as a rule violation. Personally I don't imagine it being used that often.

I think we should get hot women in the premium section. Jack can't get those.

So when the twinkies are gone we still have something and he has his twinkies.

I do like the helpful "ratings system"
If it isn't abused it should work right. Letting new people know who says stupid **** and who doesn't. "Theoretically"

Dude. It's not a big deal. If you like someone's post or agree with their point, hit the like button. If you don't like it or disagree with it, hit the thumbs down button. It's not a big deal.

Why do you think we don't have the quality of contributors that a professional forum has Mr Cannon? We used to. To be blunt.

    Then what does abuse matter?

Why are there comments about it "working" ?

It seems like a retarded, useless distraction and visual clutter on the postings. Who gives a **** if other people liked a post if it isn't an actual function?

James Cannon was a pseudonym; my real last name is Nieman.

Don't much care about the 'why' at the moment - just commenting on the way things are. Do you think this voting system would encourage people to contribute content-rich, valuable postings?

Here is a simple concept. Don't like it don't use it.
    Pretty fu**in simple.

We lost the quality of "professionals" you claim we don't have because of these petty ass arguments all over the forum. Sometimes you don't have to whine about everything.

The thumb "up" or "down" option was put in place as a rating system as far as I can tell and should work after the immature members get it out of their system.

    Rating system for what?

Do you need to be told what to like?

If the only answer to asking about the function is "stfu, stop whining" then I think it's rather telling. The thread was made for suggestions/feedback about site features. I have negative feedback and questions. Seemed to be the place to spew it.

I have a nagging suspicion that some members didn't realize we can see who leaves feedback for who. Abuses will be addressed.

I believe most are far brighter than you have ever thought.

I don't think that anyone is bright enough to edit someone else's opinion. In all seriousness, I find at least half of someone's posts "not helpful." (???) I could easily vote thumbs down on 50 per cent, in good conscience, and not be trying to game the system. What good is it if he can simply change outcomes that he doesn't like?

I'm not taking it seriously at all. Save a select few some trouble by making mine red or black or whatever.

My concern is one day logging in to discover that I have been edited to "like" brussels sprouts. I freaking hate brussels sprouts. Always have; always will. Just like my buddy, Beaver.

I couldn't have said this better myself. I feel strongly that over time, this is what this feature will become, despite whatever intention it was created for.

Just checked the activity feed thing, out of curiosity. Had it open in a browser window by itself, separate from the window I was using (not tab)

It wasn't updating to show posts I knew were made (by viewing them in this window)

When I changed focus to that window, it then updated. So if you leave it in the background, it won't auto-update unless you alt+tab to it or click to switch focus. This is using Chrome.
